24 years ago, City were doing this high scoring malarky!

So you think that Manchester City have had some high scoring games in the start to this Premiership season. Managed by Italian, Roberto Mancini it certainly is breathing fresh life into what was essentially a two or three horse race each season. However under Geordie Mel Machin we also struck fear into the opposition with high scoring games, well a couple at least. None will be more familiar to most City fans than the Division 2 encounter, at Maine Road, with Huddersfield Town, who would eventually be relegated at seasons end.



This game actaully entered the record books as it was the highest scoring League game at Maine Road and the opening exchanges would not give you a clue as to the end result. Starting off it was the visitors that had the best of the opening minutes, dominating City in their own backyard. Duncan Shearer had at least three clear cut chances for Huddersfield as ex City player Andy May returned to the ground he had left barely six months before.

Then a goal from that prolific goalscorer, Neil McNab against the run of play put City 1-0 up. The City man beat Gardner low and hard from about twenty yards out. Despite City taking the lead and being the homeside they still made bad mistakes allowing Huddersfield in. Despite this it stayed 1-0 until just before the half hour mark when Paul Stewart scored and at 2-0 down Huddersfield started to crumble. Two went to three and three became four before the referee blew for half time. City went in 4-0 up with four different scorers on the sheet, McNab, Stewart, Adcock and White.

The second half was painful to watch if you were a Huddersfield fan. City dominated the opposition who had nothing to offer. Adcock would score his second and final his hat trick, sandwiched by another Stewart strike to  make it 7-0 with still a good twenty minutes to play.

Huddersfield kept it tight for ten of those minutes before Stewart then completed his hat trick and when White added a ninth the referee, Mr Breen, must have been wondering if he brought enough 'hattrick' balls for everyone. Huddersfield converted a penalty to give the fans something to cheer but City couldn't even stand that and promptly returned to the nine goal advantage through White in the dying moments. City 10-1 victors and three hattrick heros in the same game. Come on Aguero, Balotelli and Dzeko are you going to take that from them?
